II. HOW TO HELP OUT EVEN MORE

8. Call the Honorable John Conyers, Ranking Member of the Judiciary Committee in the United States House of Representatives: (202) 225-5126. Tell him to contact the Department of Justice and the ICE and to demand that Dr. Al-Arian be allowed to leave as soon as possible in accordance with the terms of the plea agreement. (see talking points in 10 below)

9. Call the Honorable Senator Patrick Leahy, Chairman of the Judiciary Committee in the United States Senate: (202) 224-4242 Tell him to contact the Department of Justice and the ICE and to demand that Dr. Al-Arian be allowed to leave as soon as possible in accordance with the terms of the plea agreement. (see talking points in 10 below)
10. Call your elected representatives: simply visit http://www.visi.com/juan/congress/ , put in your zip code, and find the appropriate numbers.
Tell them that Dr. Al-Arian is a high-profile political prisoner whom certain members of the Justice Department are trying to prosecute him and unethically and illegally keep him imprisoned long past when he should have left the country. Mention that:
  • Dr. Al-Arian has not been found guilty by the jury in a 6 months trial in 2005;
  • He signed a plea agreement with the government which clearly stipulated that:
  1. He would be allowed to leave as soon as possible.
  2. He would NOT be required to testify or cooperate in any other investigation.
  3. Despite this, a federal prosecutor in Virginia subpoened Dr. Al-Arian to testify in a blatant disregard for the terms of the plea agreement.
  4. Dr. Al-Arian’s prison term ended –> his indictment since is then COMPLETELY ILLEGAL
  5. Dr. Al-Arian is clearly being persecuted for his political beliefs.
Ask your representatives to contact the Department of Justice and the Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) and demand that Dr. Al-Arian be allowed to leave as soon as possible in accordance with the government’s plea bargain. Also ask them to contact the chair of the judiciary committee (Senator Leahy for the Senate, Congressman Conyers for the House) and press them to act on this issue, and to hold hearings on the illegal use of grand juries in order to harrass people foe their political beliefs.
